PC (Polycarbonate)

Polycarbonates (PC) are typically amorphous and have a crystallite content of less than 5%.  PC is often used when other plastics are too soft, brittle, scratch easily, lack dimensional stability, or are not clear enough.  It is resistant against water, as well as many mineral acids, aqueous solutions from neutral salts, and oxidation agents.

PC is, however, not resistant to some chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as dichloromethane.  Alkaline aqueous solutions, amines, and ammonia also affect PC and cause changes to the material.

  • Excellent rigidity, impact strength, stiffness, and hardness
  • Good electrical insulator
  • Weatherproof and UV resistant
  • Transparent and impervious to light
  • Heat and cold resistant

Areas of application are:  CD´s and DVD´s; electrical components and machine parts; eyeglass and optical lenses; lamp covers; automobile headlight diffusers; airplane windows; safety glass for specialized vehicles; burglary-resistant glass; glass for winter gardens and greenhouses; solar panels; coverings; packaging; suitcase wrappers; auto bodies for constructing functional models; protective helmets and eye goggles; tableware; housing for reflex cameras, cell phones, laptops, etc.  Due to PC´s good biocompatibility, it is also used for a large number of single-use medical products.
